Teardrop

Type: Attack

Teardrop is a remote denial-of-service attack that affected the Windows 3.1x, Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems, as well as versions of Linux prior to 2.0.32 and 2.1.63.

The Teardrop attack involved sending IP fragments with overlapping payloads to the target machine. A bug in the TCP/IP fragmentation re-assembly code caused the fragments to be improperly handled, crashing the operating system.
